How to compress a GIF for Discord (emoji, stickers and uploads)

Discord is picky about GIF sizes, and the limits depend on where the GIF is going. Here are the current numbers and the fastest way to get under them.

Discord's GIF size limits

There isn't one Discord limit. There are several, and a GIF that's fine in chat can still be rejected as an emoji.

Compressing a GIF for a Discord emoji (256 KB)

Emoji are the hardest target, because 256 KB is tiny for an animated GIF. A typical reaction GIF off the internet is anywhere from 2 to 10 MB, so you need to cut 90% or more. Do it in this order:

  1. Crop it square. Discord shows emoji in a square slot. Anything outside the square is wasted bytes.
  2. Resize to 128×128 px. This is the biggest win by far. Going from 480 px to 128 px wide cuts the pixel count by about 93%.
  3. Drop frames. Most reaction GIFs run at 20–30 fps. At emoji size, 10–15 fps looks the same and halves the frame count.
  4. Only then reduce quality. Fewer colours and lossy compression are the last resort, because they're the steps you can actually see.

In Gifpresso, tap the Discord emoji preset. It fits the GIF inside 128×128 px, aims just under 256 KB, and works out the best quality that fits. Everything runs in your browser, so the GIF never gets uploaded to a server.

Compressing a GIF for a Discord sticker (512 KB)

Stickers get double the emoji budget and more pixels, so you can keep more of the animation. Gifpresso's Discord sticker preset fits it inside 320×320 px and aims for 490 KB, which leaves a little headroom.

GIF too big to send in chat

With the free limit now at 20 MB, most GIFs go through. The ones that don't are usually screen recordings or long clips converted to GIF. For those:

FAQ

Why does Discord say my emoji is too big when it's under 256 KB?

Check the size in kilobytes, not megabytes, and leave some headroom. A file showing as 256 KB in one tool can be a few bytes over Discord's limit. Aim for 240–250 KB.

Can I use an animated emoji without Nitro?

Anyone in a server can see its animated emoji. Using animated emoji, or any emoji across different servers, needs Nitro.

Does compressing a GIF make it blurry?

Resizing and dropping frames don't make it blurry; they make it smaller and slightly less smooth. Blur and banding come from cutting colours, which is why it should be the last step.
